The Förbindelsehall (the communications hall) can be found in the heart of Stockholm’s slaughterhouse area. Between its construction in 1912 and its disuse in the 70s it acted as the primary hub of the city’s largest and most sophisticated killing machine. An approach that does not observe and reflect on the hall’s violent past would lack historical honesty.
We propose a restorative approach that illuminates and transcends the buidling’s history. The Förbindelsehall of the future will be characterised by life and joy rather than death and fear. A green veil of foliage covers the blood red past. Meat hooks now carry plant-based products and vegetables instead of carcasses.
The transformation begins with giving the hall an internal skeleton: a spine that, with minimal impact on the existing, allows for flexible additions of functions and installations. The skeleton divides the hall in to three zones - auditorium (event), laboratorium (innovation) and forum (market) - each zone’s program supported by a “pod”. Here stairs lead to the blood red gallery walkway. Its elevated position and its exhibitions on the building’s history invite the visitor to engage in new spatial, temporal and ethical perspectives.
A place for those with an open mind - for those who want to be challenged and surprised when it comes to food, music and experiences.
